Alina Margolis was larger than life and her story could fill the biographies of several people. Her parents were friends of author Marian Falski and Alina became the model of Ala from Poland's most famous reading primer. During the war, she fought in the Jewish Ghetto Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising and received the Cross of Valor. After the war, she married Ghetto Uprising war hero Marek Edelman, and cared for diabetic children. When the anti-Semitic campaign of March 1968 forced her (along with thousands of other Jews) to leave Poland, a new phase of her remarkable life began. In Paris, she became involved in Doctors without Borders and cofounded the Polish section of Doctors of the World. She helped rescue Vietnam's boat people, worked in hospitals in El Salvador, Chad, Afghanistan, and Bosnia. In the 1980s, she organized assistance for the Polish democratic opposition. After Poland's transformation, she founded the Nobody's Children Foundation. Despite the tremendous suffering she experienced and saw in her life, she continued to enjoy it. The film accompanies Alina during one of her final visits to Poland. Interviews with her, friends and family, are enhanced with archive materials from the Warsaw ghetto, her work with Doctors of the World, as well as animation.
